The Work of Jacques Tati Arranged for Drawing
36 drawings "arranging" Jacques Tati's Trafic (1971) and Playtime (1967) as a pre-existing composition for pencil. It utilizes scribbling as a drawing technique based on Mended Pencil sculpture works and approximates the musical arrangement as well as the audio-visual "dub" through tracing. By adapting Tati's mimetic films as a score, it allows for scribbling to become improvisational and antiphonal, as well as translative and interpretive. By layering himself into the scenes, Martin the drawer takes on the role of Tati the mime, whose mimetic gestures become the scribbling hand of the drawer. (2021)
